The CCSP exam costs $599 USD for a single attempt through Pearson VUE. That is the number most people Google. That is also where most people stop thinking about the actual budget.

I hold the CCSP. I have been through the full cost cycle — study materials, the exam, and the annual maintenance that kicks in the moment you pass. This article walks through what the total financial commitment looks like and how to minimize it without cutting preparation quality.

The Full Cost Picture

Per ISC2’s official exam pricing page, the CCSP exam fee is $599 USD for the Americas and most regions (pricing and taxes vary by exam location). ISC2’s published fee schedule lists a $50 rescheduling fee and a $100 cancellation fee.

Japan-specific note: Pearson VUE test centers in Japan include locations in Tokyo, Osaka, and other major cities. Per ISC2’s official exam outline, CCSP is offered in English, Chinese, Japanese, and German. Check the Pearson VUE and ISC2 websites for current Japan locations and available languages, as these can change.

One thing the $599 headline number hides: it’s the cheapest part of the exercise if you fail once. I underestimated my own readiness on my first CCSP attempt years ago — not this one, an earlier ISC2 exam — and the 30-day cooldown before a retake cost me more in lost momentum than the $599 itself. When I budget for a certification now, I add a mental “failure tax”: if my last three full-length mocks weren’t consistently above 75%, I push the exam date back rather than gamble the fee. That single habit has saved me more than any Udemy coupon.

ISC2 Annual Membership: $135/Year

After you pass the CCSP exam and complete the endorsement process, you must maintain active ISC2 membership at $135/year. This is ongoing — there is no one-time payment option. The membership covers your credential maintenance and requires 90 CPE (Continuing Professional Education) credits over each 3-year cycle.

Some people are surprised by this. Factor it into your budgeting: over 10 years of holding CCSP, that’s $1,350 in membership fees. Compared to the ISC2 regional salary medians this is a small amount — but it’s not free, and it’s a recurring cost for as long as you hold the credential.

Retakes are expensive — this is a strong argument for investing in preparation rather than hoping to luck through. A second attempt at $599 is $200 more than a thorough study stack of Udemy + official guide + practice exams. Prepare properly first.

How to Reduce Total Cost

1. Employer reimbursement. Many organizations — especially consulting firms, financial institutions, and large enterprises with cloud transformation programs — will cover CCSP exam costs as professional development. Present a business case: “CCSP will improve my ability to govern our cloud security posture and is increasingly required by our enterprise clients.” Don’t ask; propose.

2. Udemy sales. Udemy courses are almost always available for $10-30 during their frequent sales events. Never pay full price. Check at the start of each month — Udemy runs “flash sales” regularly.

3. Pass on the first attempt. The most cost-effective approach is thorough preparation before scheduling the exam. A $100 study stack is trivial compared to a $599 retake.

4. Free ISC2 resources. ISC2 provides sample exam questions and study guides for free on their website. These are worth using alongside paid materials.

5. Community resources. The r/ccsp community (Reddit) maintains study notes, question collections, and discussion threads that are genuinely useful — and free.

In my own case, I put the exam fee, one Udemy sale, and the official study guide on a single expense line and asked my manager to reimburse it before I scheduled the exam, not after. Getting sign-off in advance meant the conversation was about professional development, not a reimbursement request for something already decided — a distinction that made the approval faster and, frankly, less awkward for everyone involved.

Is Certification an Investment or an Expense?

Certification should be an investment, not a purchase. As a hypothetical, illustrative only: if a raise added $10,000/year to a $100,000 salary, the certification’s cost (exam, materials, and even the first 10 years of membership) would be recovered within a couple of months of that raise taking effect.
