CISSP Practice Questions 2026: Free Resources and What to Expect

Practice questions are the most important component of CISSP preparation — more important than reading study guides, more important than video courses. Not because volume matters (though it does), but because working through questions is the only way to develop the contextual reasoning that CISSP tests.

This guide covers the best free practice question resources, how to use them effectively, and what to expect from the actual exam.

What CISSP Questions Actually Look Like

Before discussing resources, it helps to understand what makes CISSP questions distinctive.

The “two right answers” problem: CISSP questions frequently present multiple answers that are all technically defensible. The question is testing your ability to identify the most correct answer from a risk management and business perspective.

Example:

You discover that an employee has been accessing files outside their job function for the past three weeks. What should you do first?

Possible answers:

• A. Immediately revoke the employee’s access
• B. Contact the employee’s manager
• C. Notify HR and legal
• D. Document the evidence and conduct an investigation before taking action

D is the CISSP answer. Not because A, B, or C are wrong — all three may happen eventually — but because the first action from a governance and forensics perspective is to preserve evidence and understand the scope before taking action that might tip off the employee or destroy evidence.

This “think before acting,” “preserve evidence,” “involve the right stakeholders in sequence” pattern appears throughout CISSP questions. Developing the instinct for this reasoning pattern is what practice questions build.

(ISC)² provides official sample questions on their website. The number is limited (typically 25–50 questions), but they are authoritative and reflect actual exam style. Use these to calibrate your understanding of what official CISSP questions look like.

Reddit r/cissp Community Resources

Best use: Finding community-curated lists of free resources and reading candidate experience reports that describe question style and difficulty.

YouTube CISSP Explanation Videos

Several security educators post CISSP domain explanations and walk through practice questions on YouTube. These are particularly useful for understanding why specific answers are correct — which is more valuable than just accumulating practice question exposure.

Best use: Conceptual grounding and seeing the reasoning process modeled by practitioners, not for high-volume practice.

Paid Resources Worth the Investment

Free resources are valuable supplements but are not sufficient on their own for serious CISSP preparation. The highest-quality paid practice question banks:

How to Use Practice Questions Effectively

Do not treat practice questions as progress metrics. The score you get on a practice test matters far less than what you learn from the questions you got wrong — and the ones you got right for the wrong reason.

The Right Way to Review Practice Questions

For every question you answer — correct or incorrect:

1. Read the explanation for why the correct answer is right
2. Read the explanation for why each incorrect answer is wrong
3. If you chose the correct answer but for reasons other than what the explanation describes, treat it as a near-miss and review the underlying concept
4. For wrong answers: identify whether your error was conceptual (you did not know the material) or reasoning (you knew the material but chose the wrong answer type)

Keeping a running log of your wrong answers by domain will reveal patterns. If you consistently miss questions in Domain 1 that involve risk acceptance decisions, you know exactly what to work on.

The Trap: High Scores Without Understanding

Some candidates score 80%+ on practice tests but fail the actual exam. This happens when practice question sets become familiar — you are recognizing questions rather than applying reasoning.

Signs you are in this trap:

• Your score increases significantly on question banks you have already done once
• You can identify correct answers quickly but cannot explain why they are correct
• You score well on domain-specific tests but worse on mixed practice tests

Mitigation: Use multiple question banks from different sources, and focus your review time on explanations rather than score performance.

Volume Targets

This is not a rigid target — some candidates pass with fewer, some benefit from more. The goal is developing the reasoning pattern to a point where it is reflexive.

Domain-Specific Question Tips

Domain 1 questions: If you find yourself choosing the “technically correct” action over the “business-appropriate” action, practice consciously asking: “What does a risk-aware executive do here?” before selecting your answer.

Domain 3 cryptography questions: The exam does not require mathematical computation. It does require understanding which algorithm is appropriate for which use case and why. Practice matching scenarios to cryptographic solutions, not computing cipher outputs.

Domain 7 incident response questions: CISSP almost always prioritizes containment and evidence preservation over eradication. If a question asks “what should you do first” in an incident context, containment beats remediation.

Domain 4 and 5 questions: Many questions hinge on least privilege or access control model definitions. Know the formal definitions cold — DAC, MAC, RBAC, ABAC — and practice applying them to scenarios.

For Japan-Based Candidates: Language Considerations

If you are planning to take the Japanese-language linear exam, practice with Japanese-language question banks when possible. The translation of certain security concepts uses different terminology than what you may encounter in English-language study materials.

The Japanese exam also has 250 questions over 6 hours versus 125–175 over 4 hours for the English CAT. Build stamina for the longer format if you are taking the Japanese version — full-length 250-question practice sessions are valuable.
